About the Course
Patients that are sedated for procedures in the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System are provided a uniform and safe standard of care through an intake, sedation, monitoring, and disposition / discharge system that is operated in an environment designed and supplied to make the sedation and procedure safe, by providers who are properly trained and qualified.
This course is used to properly train, qualify, and approve doctors, nurses, and other practitioners to administer sedation in the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System.
The presentation is designed to follow the process of a sedating event from patient assessment, facility preparation, medication administration, patient monitoring during the procedure and recovery from discharge to disposition.
The course and its accompanying materials teach participants to:
- Assess a patient and relative risks prior to a procedure that involves sedation;
- Understand the medications commonly used for sedation;
- Operate monitors and document patient status during the procedure and recovery;
- Recognize and effectively treat airway compromise;
- Intervene in a timely fashion to rescue and resuscitate the patient as needed;
- Participate in data gathering and performance improvement activities.
After participants complete the course and review the accompanying materials, they are asked to take a 20-question post-test to demonstrate participation in the program. A passing grade of 80% (16 correct of 20) is required to become approved to administer sedation in the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System. If a participant fails the test, they're asked to review the course and retake the test until a passing grade of 80% is achieved.
The software program automatically grades the test. After a participant passes the test, and completes the Sedation Compliance Statement, he or she is approved to administer sedation in the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System for a period of two years beginning from when he or she passes the test and submits the results to the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health Systems' Department of Anesthesiology.
The post-test and evaluation of the program is also the mechanism by which participants receive Continuing Medical (CME) or Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) credit.
